OLYMPIC TRAINING PROGRAM for Cap Tex Tri

Kimberley R.

I joined Tri-Now having zero experience with triathlon. Although I was a decent cyclist and runner, I only knew the basics of swimming and hadn’t swam more than a few yards at time in the last 30 years. I joined the Beginner Triathlon program, and with the help of Coach Linda, Coach Frank, and Coach Maddie successfully completed my first sprint triathlon! I loved it so much that I did the beginner program a second time, this time taking on a triathlon with an open water swim. Since joining, I’ve done multiple sprint triathlons, an Olympic distance, and am now training for a 70.3/half-Ironman distance. I would not have been able to complete these events with confidence had it not been for Tri-Now. The tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way — from how to set up a transition area to general swim technique to sighting buoys — have been invaluable. But more than that, the Tri-Now community is wonderful. It’s so empowering to attend group workouts with everyone from first timers to multiple Ironman finishers. There’s always someone to push you and offer advice.

I joined Tri-Now shortly after moving back to Dallas in 2021 and doing next to nothing physical for the 3 years prior. Swimming was my comfort zone, but I didn’t want to subject myself to just the black line at the bottom of the pool. I needed a complete mental reset, and triathlon seemed like a natural fit given my familiarity with the pool and the opportunity for variety in other disciplines. I googled “triathlon Dallas”, and Tri-Now popped up first.

The big reason I wanted to join a club rather than do it solo was because I knew I needed a coach. Growing up there was always such an emphasis placed on being an internal motivator, but now as an adult I know that’s just not always me. Tell me what to do, at what intensity, for how long, and I got it. The coaches at Tri-Now, from Frank to Carrie to Bea (specifically in those early days), were not just invested coaches but also invested friends and mentors. They fostered an environment where I felt comfortable showing up wherever I was at that day.
Tri-Now has introduced me to wonderful, uplifting friends and teammates, and I’ve accomplished things I wouldn’t have considered feasible in the not so distant past. After recently doing my first 70.3, it scratched an itch that I look forward to continuing with Tri-Now in the future!

Even though triathlon is an individual sport, I want to surround myself with others who are training and competing. The TriNow team has people of all demographics and athletic ability. The coaches are challenging, encouraging and experienced.
Over time the group becomes more than a team and more like another family. Great people, good times and challenging workouts. It’s a win all around.
